How To Create An Alias For Gmail

There are quite a few ways by which you can create multiple email addresses for Gmail and G Suite.

Creating an email alias lets the user receive an email at that address. You should also set up the ability to send an email with the alias address in the From field.

Gmail email aliases using plus and dot notation

When you choose a Gmail address, you actually get more than just yourusername@gmail.com. Here are two different ways you can modify your Gmail address and still get your mail:

  1. Append a plus ("+") sign and any combination of words or numbers after your email address. For example, if your name was yourusername@gmail.com, you could send mail to yourusername+friends@gmail.com or yourusername+mailinglists@gmail.com.
  2. Insert one or several dots (".") anywhere in your email address. Gmail doesn't recognize periods as characters in addresses — we just ignore them. For example, you could tell people your address was yourusername@gmail.com, youruser.name@gmail.com or you.ruser.name@gmail.com. (We understand that there has been some confusion about this in the past, but to settle it once and for all, you can indeed receive mail at all the variations with dots.)

For instance, if your email address is hello@gmail.com, any email that's addressed to either he.ll.o@gmail.com or hello+world@gmail.com will also be delivered to your main inbox since Gmail ignores dots and anything that's after the plus symbol in email usernames.

You just need to add these aliases to be also in your From like this:

  1. In the top right, click Settings and then Settings.
  2. Click the Accounts and Import or Accounts tab
  3. The list of different addresse or alias is shown below:
    chrome extension
  4. Click on add another email address you own under send mail as
  5. Enter your alias – for example yourname+world@gmail.com

Therefore, theoretically speaking, you get an unlimited number of email addresses with one Gmail account.

Configure aliased via G Suite Admin console

If your email address is realname@company.com, you can set up a separate address for support@example.com. Then, use the second as an alias when you don't want to give out your primary address but still have the emails delivered to your main Gmail inbox. Or, for example, if you run a website at example.com, you can have one mail email address realname@example.com, and then set up aliases like tips@example.com (for blog tips), advertise@example.com (for potential advertisers) and so on.

To set up an email alias in Google G Suite to the following:

  1. Log in to G Suite admin console an admin. The URL for admin is https://admin.google.com/a/example.com.
  2. Then click the Users
  3. Click on the user (for example realname@example.com)
  4. Click User information -> Email aliases.
  5. Under Email aliases add another email address with this user (for exampletips@example.com). You may associate up to 30 different nicknames per user in G Suite. Note that you can't create an alias currently assigned to someone else, either as a primary address or alias.

You need to add these aliases to be also in your From like this:

  1. Loginh into Gmail using your primary account (for example realname@example.com).
  2. In the top right, click Settings Settings and then Settings.
  3. Click the Accounts and Import or Accounts tab
  4. Click on add another email address you own under send mail as
  5. Type your new email alias (i.e. tips@example.com)

Thus, if you ever want a new email address, you don't have to create another user in Google G Suite – just add a new nickname to your existing email address.

Setup Gmail aliases via authorization and auto forward

If you do not have G Suite admin permissions, you are using Gmail, or the alias email address already exists, then follow the following steps:

Receive emails to an alias – email send to tips@example.com are received also by realname@example.com

In order to receive emails from an alias, you need to set up automatically forward of your messages from alias email address to your primary email address. You can choose to forward all new messages or just certain ones.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail using the account you want to forward messages from (your alias – for example tips@example.com).
  2. In the top right, click Settings
  3. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab

  5. Enter the email address you want to forward messages to – in our case that will be realname@example.com
  6. Click Next and then Proceed and then OK.
  7. A verification message will be sent to that address. Click the verification link in that message.
  8. Go back to the settings page for the Gmail account you want to forward messages from, and refresh your browser.
